Spring Diff Mod
Written by Jason Ray
Welcome to the spring diff mod, this modification will
help your t-maxx, or e-maxx get better traction on dirt or pavement. It
gives you the benefits of having a spool, but you won't continually break
your axles! This modification will also drastically help your maxx's on-road
handling!!! So lets get to it!
Step One
Remove your gas tank pretty simple so far eh?
Step Two
Remove your engine.
Step Three
remove your skid plate
Step Four
remove the 4 screws holding the chassis to the bulk heads and remove rear
assembly from chassis.
Step Five
Remove bumper mount screws, take the bumper and the bulk head support off
(bulk head support sits in between the two bulk heads)
Step Six
Remove shock tower screws from rear assembly.
Step Seven
With the shock tower unbolted you can now pull the two bulk heads away from
each other, this allows the sliders attached the the diff to slide out. Pull
your diff out of the rear assembly.
Step Eight
Using an allen remove all three axles from the diff.
Step Nine
remove the two screws in the diff housing.
Step Ten
mark the retaining collar on the front of the diff with a marker and remove
it, then split the two diff halves.
Step Eleven
Remove the 4 screws holding your ring gear on the diff cup. Be careful not
to loose them, they are tiny!!!
Step Twelve
Separate the the ring gear from the diff cup, this is what it should look
like.
Step Thirteen
carefully grab the spider gear pin with a pair of pliers and slide it out.
Step Fourteen
Clean out the diff cup with just a rag or paper towel, do the same with the
spider gears and pin.
Step Fifteen
Find a "clicker" type ball point pen, remove the spring from it and place it
over your spider gear pin.
Step Sixteen
Put your spider gears back on the spider gear pin with the spring on it and
place it back in the diff cup.
Step Seventeen
Get some bearing grease (Available at any auto parts store) and pack the
diff cup, make sure you work all the air bubbles out by packing the grease
in the cup.
Step Eighteen
Now just reassemble everything in reverse order. Make sure when you put the
retaining ring back in the diff you line up the mark you left when taking it
apart! This will prevent your diff from being installed backwards. You have
completed the spring diff mod!!! Now go out and play and enjoy your new
found traction!!! If you have any questions feel free to email me at:
